Easiest DIY rainbow rice for kids play
Our rascals totally adore playing with rainbow rice. It's one sensory play material that never seems to get old. Now that they're older, it's also been a great learning experience to involve them in making the various different colours of dyed rice. The method we use is really extremely easy and completely fail safe...in that it hasn't failed for me yet!
You will need rice (we use budget brand white rice), white vinegar and a range of food dye colours. I usually use a half cup of rice per colour.
Add half cup of rice to a container, add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar along with 3-5 drops of food dye. Mix well with a spoon until all the grains of rice have taken on the colour of the food dye. Next the rice needs to be dried. I spread the rice evenly onto an oven tray covered in baking paper.
Repeat the above with different colours of dye, spreading each one onto the oven tray; then place in a warm oven ( around 18 degrees Celsius ) and allow to dry for 10 - 15 minutes.
Once your happy it's dry, take out of the oven and leave it to cool for at least 20 minutes before you let your rascals get their hands on it. Once it's cool, one thing your kids will probably love just as much as ours is letting them mix all the colours and pour it into their sensory box or tray for endless fun.
