Halloween STEAM activity an invitation to create a spider web
We haven’t had an invitation activity for a while and came across this idea for creating a spiders web using sticks and yarn. With Halloween fast approaching, I thought it would be a great invitation to use up some of the sticks we’ve been collecting around the garden.
This invitation set up contained:
HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH
EMPTY TP ROLL
I preparation for the activity. I painted the TP roll with black acrylic paint. It took a few minutes to dry and then I cut it into rings using scissors. I then used a single hole punch to create holes where the pipe-cleaners could be pushed through. This was the basis for the spider.
I placed everything on the table and invited our five year old to come and sit with me. I explained that we would be making a spider web using the sticks and yarn, and that we would place a spider somewhere on the web.
I hadn’t quite anticipated how many wonderful learning challenges this simple activity would provide before we started. It didn’t take long for our eldest little rascal to figure out that the yarn would represent the web and so needed to be wrapped around the sticks. The next challenge was to construct the sticks so that they would stand up. She played around with different amounts of play dough and different sized sticks until she had engineered a tree like structure.
Wrapping the yarn took care and consideration too as she mastered looping it round the twigs being careful not pull the twigs out of place. Finally making the spider was a simple case of feeding 4 small pieces of pipe cleaner through the holes in the TP roll and then choosing a twig to place it over onto the web.
