Invitation to create a Nature Crown
This is a great nature inspired activity that can be a follow up using things found from a nature scavenger hunt around your garden or whilst out and about on a walk.
Since it’s Spring here in the northern hemisphere, we’re super lucky to have an abundance of rhododendrons in our area. They are everywhere, including in our garden. The kids love to pick the flowers, but I try to encourage them to only take the flowers that have already fallen from the tree; the ground in simply carpeted in them.
We brought a selection of them indoors and I set up an area on our dining table with a glue pot, paint brush and strips of cardboard. I invited Sadie to create a Nature Crown, of course she wanted to add gems to it, but that is totally not necessary.
Sadie was really captured by this activity. One, because she had collected the flowers herself, and two because she got to use a glue pot and brush; definitely one of her favourite craft time activities.
She sat at the table happily pulling apart the flowers, deciding which colour petals would be glued next and choosing where to place them.
We talked about some parts of the flowers, why flowers have bright colourful petals and the role of the bees. You could easily turn this into a lesson on flower anatomy for older children.
She was pretty chuffed with her efforts and even made one for her preschool teacher too!
